MUKAH: The Dalat/Mukah District Council (MDDM) conducted an operation on illegal building extensions here yesterday.

The joint operation comprising the police, Land and Survey and Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) was led by MDDM Walikota, Kadir Jamil.

The two-day operation starting yesterday covers three commercial centres, namely Setia Raja Commercial Centre, New Township Phase 1 and 2.

Kadir when met at Mukah New Administrative Centre here said the council had in fact issued notices for illegal extensions to several shop owners on 16 September last year.

“Although the notices were issued to the owners of the affected premises, none of them responded to the notices,” he said.

Kadir said a meeting was held with the affected shop owners and the council had extended the grace period of dismantling the illegal extensions.

“We extended the grace period to 1 March this year because they were celebrating Chinese New Year and again they did not abide to it.

“We have been very diplomatic in our approach and also held a dialogue session with them before agreeing to extend it again to end of June.

“The latest one, we want them to dismantle their illegal extensions on their properties by 1 July. This includes the awning which should not be more than 1.8 metres,” he said.
