Kuching teams sweep men’s, women’s titles

BETONG: Kuching squads proved they were the teams to beat when both their men’s and women’s squads emerged champions in the Under-20 Minister of Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah Cup 2017 Futsal Championship on Sunday.

The Kuching men’s squad captured the champion title after defeating Sibu 6-1.

Meanwhile, a big victory 6-0 was also recorded by the women’s squad against Sibu in the final.

The final of the two categories took place at the Sports Hall, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan, Betong on Sunday.

The third place in the men’s category were won by Mukah who defeated Bintulu 3-2 through a penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Miri team won the third place with a 2-1 win.

As champions, both Kuching men’s and women’s squad took home a cash prize of RM5,000, challenge trophy, an accompany trophy and medals respectively.

Therunners up winners for both categories won a cash prize of RM4,000, trophies and medals.

The third-placed teams of the categories received a cash prize of RM3,000, trophies and medals each while the fourth placed winners took home a cash prize RM2,000, trophies and medals.

The teams who did not qualify to the quarterfinals also received RM500 each and teams that failed to reach the semi-finals received RM700 per team.

Meanwhile, Kuching squads also won three additional awards when their three players were named best players throughout the tournament.

Kuching goalkeeper Muhamad Rafizal Mustapha and Norashima Othman were named Best Goalkeeper (men’s and women’s) while Muhd ??Erzuan Gafar won the Best Player award in the men’s category.

Other special awards winners included Mohd Nurmanshah Ismail (Bintulu-men’s top scorer), Sibu (Men’s Fair Play), Sabrina Poh (Bintulu-Women’s Best Player), Siti Rohani Saptu (Miri-women’s top scorer) and Sibu (Women Fair Play).

Saribas State Assemblyman, Mohd Radzi Sitam who represented Betong Member of Parliament and Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas gave away the prizes.

Also present were Deputy President Betong Division Football Association, Abang Suhordie Abang Zaini, Resident Betong Friday Belik and Assistant Secretary (Sports Section) of Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, John Nasuil Peter Timik.
