KUCHING: The anticipated upgrading works for Kuching Waterfront are scheduled to commence in January 2024, with an estimated cost exceeding RM2.5mil.
The implementation phase is projected to span over a year, concluding by December 2024.
Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi highlighted that to facilitate the upgrading process, the relocation of hawkers along Kuching Waterfront has been organised into stages.
“The first stage, which began on July 20, involved relocating the blue canopy hawkers to Ban Hock Wharf. The second stage, set to commence this coming September, will involve the push-cart hawkers.
“The third stage is slated for November this year and will encompass the kiosk hawkers. Both push-cart hawkers and kiosk hawkers will be accommodated at Ban Hock Wharf.
“To ensure convenience for both hawkers and visitors, Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has prepared various facilities, including paving the wharf space and providing essential electrical and water supplies,” the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication (Utility) explained on Tuesday (Aug 8).
Ban Hock Wharf will also be adorned with decorative lamps and attractive landscaping, creating an inviting environment for visitors. Additionally, a range of engaging activities will be organised to captivate the interest of visitors in the new locations.
Dr Abdul Rahman, speaking during a press conference following the conclusion of the Kuching City Cleanliness Month, stressed that landscape enhancements throughout the Kuching Waterfront area would be prioritised. “The recreational aspect for visitors will also be upgraded, encompassing pedestrian pathways and surfaces.”
Addressing the hawkers, he urged their cooperation to facilitate the smooth execution of the upgrading projects.
