LABUAN: Labuan, with its captivating marine sport and sport tourism events, is poised to become a frontrunner in the tourism sector, attracting adventure enthusiasts and travellers from around the Asian region,  said Labuan Chamber of Commerce (LCC) chairman Daniel Doughty.

He said Labuan’s strategic geographical location and breath-taking natural beauty have made it an ideal setting for a diverse range of marine sport activities.

“The island’s crystal-clear waters at Pulau Papan and Rusukan Besar, vibrant coral reefs, and lush landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for thrilling water-based endeavours.

“From snorkelling and scuba diving to sailing and jet skiing, Labuan offers an array of options for visitors seeking an adrenaline rush,” he said to Bernama today.

He said that LCC, one of the leading advocates for economic growth and development on the island, emphasised that Labuan’s commitment to fostering marine sports must go hand in hand with its dedication to sustainable tourism practices.

Local authorities and businesses must collaborate to ensure that these activities are carried out responsibly, minimising their impact on the fragile marine ecosystem, he said.

“Labuan’s marine sport and sport tourism events are not only about adventure; they are about experiencing nature while preserving it for future generations.

“We’re proud to showcase our island’s unique offerings and position Labuan as a premier destination for travellers who seek both excitement and environmental consciousness,” he said.

He added that one of the events held which captured international attention is the Labuan Water Festival, an annual festival of marine sports which draws participants and spectators from various corners of the globe.

“The festival features a series of competitions, including international deep sea fishing, kayaking, photography contests, and traditional boat races among others.

“Beyond the exhilarating contests, visitors can immerse themselves in Labuan’s rich cultural heritage, savour local cuisine, and explore the island’s historical sites,” he said.

He said Labuan’s reputation as a sport tourism hub is not limited to its marine offerings.

The island has also made significant strides in promoting sports like beach volleyball, triathlons, and golf, enhancing its appeal to a broader range of athletes and enthusiasts.

As Labuan continues to invest in its tourism infrastructure and promote its unique attractions, it will drive sustainable growth in the number of visitors and revenue.

Therefore, he recommended that the Labuan Corporation’s Tourism, Culture and Arts Department to participate in the tourism-related expo with the primary focus of promoting Labuan as a hub for sports tourism.  – BERNAMA
