Laudable feat by Sarawak athletes

KUCHING: Athletes who represented Sarawak displayed a very commendable show at the Perak All Comers 1/2022 Athletics Championship which took place in Ipoh last weekend.

They took home a total of 11 medals, comprising six gold, three silver and two bronze in the two-day tournament held on February 26 and 27.

Two of the gold medals were contributed by Jackie Wong in the men’s hammer event with a throw of 65.37m, thus setting a new tournament record and one by Grace Wong Xiu Mei who won the women’s hammer event in a new tournament record with a throw of 61.14m.

Four more gold medals were contributed by sprint champion Jonathan Nyipa in the 200m (21.49s); Queenie Ting Kung Ni in the women’s discus event with a throwing distance of 47.37m (also a new record of the tournament); Mohd Rizzua Haizad in the 110m hurdles (14.11s) and Brandon Ting Li King in the triple jump (15.16m).

Meanwhile, three silver medals were each won by Erissca Peter from the women’s 200m (26.15s), Jonathan Nyipa from the 100m (10.54s) and Jonah Chang Rigan from the women’s shot put (14.91m).

The two bronze medals were contributed by Kong Chin Poh in the men’s shot put (14.54m) and Abdul Rahman Lee in the men’s discus (41.29m).

Team Sarawak sent a total of 26 athletes to compete in the tournament, comprising those who are training for the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) under the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) and the Outstanding Elite Programme for Athletes of the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC).
