KUCHING: Good news for cycling enthusiasts! The Layar Cycling Carnival (LCC) is making a comeback with its fifth edition this year.

The LCC 2023 will take place from September 1 to September 3 at Layar, Betong.

Deputy Minister of Youth, Sport, and Entrepreneur Development, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, announced that the LCC will feature a new category exclusively for women in the road race event. The decision to introduce this category stems from the low participation of women in the previous edition, with only 10 out of 266 women cyclists joining the LCC.

Rentap said that to encourage greater participation, the women’s route has been designed to be less challenging, with a flat race passing through Pan Borneo. The organisers are anticipating around 300 to 400 participants from both domestic and international locations, including Brunei and Indonesia.

During a press conference held at Pandalela Aquatic Centre Kuching today (June 26), Rentap highlighted that the LCC 2023 coincides with the 50th anniversary of Sarawak Saberkas and the 60th anniversary of Sarawak Independence. This year’s race will present additional challenges as participants will ride through Bukit Saban constituency, encountering hilly terrain.

The race covers a distance of approximately 100 kilometres, and in addition to the race, registered participants will have the opportunity to experience longhouse life through a homestay programme.

Interested individuals can register for the event through the LCC’s Facebook page. Early bird registration is priced at RM80, while the regular fee is RM100.

The LCC 2023 is organised by the Betong Land & Survey Office and Saberkas Layar, in collaboration with the Sarawak Cycling Association. This year’s event will include various categories, such as Junior (under 17 years old), Master A (35 to 44 years old), Master B (45 years old and above), Open category, Minivelo category, Women’s category, Betong Closed category, and Sarawak Closed category.
