MIRI: Miri police department needs to upgrade its facilities and increase its manpower in order to better improve service to the public.

“Our current facilities such as the mobile police vehicle (MPV) and Motorcycle Patrolling Unit (URB) are inadequate for our growing city’s needs,” said Tourism, Arts and Culture Assistant Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Lee said this at a reunion dinner of policemen who have served in Miri held on Saturday night at a leading hotel here.

He believed that with the increasing number of police officers, crimes rates can be reduced.

Also present during the reunion dinner gathering were Bukit AmanCriminal Investigation Department (CID) director Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd, Ex-Police Association of Miri chairman Superintendent (rtd) Han Hipeni, Lembaga Amanah Bekenu chairman Datuk Usop Sani Wahab and Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah.

The reunion was jointly held by the Ex-police Association of Miri (PBPM), with Miri Division Lawn Tennis Association and Matu Daro Community Association of Miri.

He added, with Miri’s status as a resort city (the second largest city in the state after Kuching),and with a population of 350,000, a better facility in the police force will allow for greater efficiency in operations and in providing better service to the public.

Lee hoped that Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd would convey this message to Bukit Aman.

Lee also stated the poor condition of the existing police station (Miri Central Police Station (CPS) which he sees needs a bigger space and better facilities to better serve the community.

“CPS has been there with the same design (unchanged) since 1950’s; the city is growing, the police station (CPS) needs to be upgraded with bigger space and better facilities,” he said.

Nearly 400 policemen and their family members attended the reunion.

Lee also handed over a cheque worth RM3,000 to the event organising committee to help fund their activities.

Apart from that, three associations namely PBPM, Miri Division Lawn Tennis association, and Matu Daro Community Association of Miri each received a mock cheque worth RM3,000.
