KUCHING: As the holiday season approaches, various donations will be made to the less privileged for them to enjoy Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration.

Various parties, including government agencies, associations and the private sector, will step forward to help ease the burden of the underprivileged groups, ensuring that they are not overlooked.

A total of 50 people, including 18 residents and 32 students, received red packets and essential items such as cakes and biscuits worth RM200 each from Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki, today (Jan 18).

Ibrahim said the donation will help to alleviate the burden of the local community, which will soon celebrate CNY.

“A programme like this is very good because it helps the community and students who are less fortunate in welcoming CNY.

“In fact, now is the perfect time to deliver all these donations since the celebration is just around the corner.

“Although the amount given is not a huge amount, I’m sure it means a lot to them as they make plans to celebrate with their beloved family and friends,” he said.

Ibrahim was speaking at the Gong Xi Fatt Cai Donation Programme 2023 at Chung Hua Secondary School No. 4.

He said the programme was organised not only for the CNY festival, but also for other festivals such as Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Gawai and Christmas.

“We are inclusive in the Satok area by implementing programmes like this every time before the festive season, regardless of religion or race,” he added.

The programme is organised by the Jawatan Kuasa Kemajuan dan Keselamatan Kampung Green Road (Area A) to help school students and local residents who are facing financial difficulties.

The donations included mandarin oranges or lokam, a symbol of wealth and luck to the Chinese community.

Also present were Chung Hua Middle School No. 1-4, Board of Management chairman Datuk Richard Wee and MBKS Deputy Mayor Hilmy Othman.
