KUCHING: Curated light installations are expected to shine a new light on the traffic garden at Kenyalang Park here.

It is a collaboration between Kuching South City Council and Think City for The Light Project as part of Art In The City 2021 (AITC).

The project run by Cendana, aims to stimulate the local economy through culture and creating more opportunities for members of the creative economy.

“The project is to pursue a continuous engagement with the arts community and wider public as well as to encourage creativity and inclusivity similar to other projects by MBKS,” said Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

“For the record, the park was recently completed under the Kenyalang Park’s Traffic Garden Expansion and Community Rejuvenation Programme, a pilot project under MBKS’s Urban Renewal Initiative. Physical upgrading of the park is just the beginning as more community-centric projects are planned to enliven the area even further,” he added.

Meanwhile, Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the light project was a most welcomed partner initiative as the state recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I hope this programme will encourage similar events in future, especially ones that will not only benefit but strengthen the communities and sectors that are most affected,” he added.

This year’s AITC is made special with a variety of 100 dynamic, colourful and optimistic programmes.

The effort’s first iteration in 2018 has since then spanned to include an array of music, dance, craft, theatre, film dance, food, heritage, history, and more spread across three full months from October to December 2021.

It has expanded to five cities nationwide namely Butterworth, Batu Pahat, Ipoh, Melaka, and Kuching.

“We are encouraged to work with MBKS in contributing to Kuching’s creative sector post pandemic and look forward to continued collaborations such as these to contribute to development of the local arts and culture,” said Cendana chief executive officer Izan Satrina Mohd Sallehuddin.
