Local nabbed in connection with gruesome murder; family feud suspected as motive

MIRI: Police have arrested a local man in connection with the grim discovery of a man’s body, bearing 10 slash wounds, at a lake in Senadin here yesterday (Apr 17).

Miri police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the suspect aged in his 30s, was picked up from his residence in Tudan around 2 pm on the same day.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the motive for the murder is believed to stem from internal disputes among family members.

“The deceased and the suspect were uncle and nephew.

“He is being remanded for seven days until Apr 25 to facilitate investigations,” he said in a statement today.

The tragic incident happened around 9 am when members of the public stumbled upon the lifeless body of a man floating face down in the lake, and immediately alerted the police to the scene

The 57-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and his remains were transported to Miri Hospital for a post-mortem.

Initial investigations strongly suggest foul play, with indications pointing towards homicide rather than natural causes.

“Examinations on the deceased’s body revealed 10 slashes suspected to be inflicted by a sharp object, namely six on the head, two on the right palm, one on the back of the body, and another on the left knee,” he said.

Alexson said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

He also advised the public to refrain from speculating on the case as it could impede ongoing investigations.
