Long queue for Sarawak Laksa in Beijing

BEIJING: The exotic taste of the most renown dish from Borneo Malaysia, Sarawak Laksa drew big crowds at the Asia Food Festival here.

Many Beijing residents and visitors patiently queued up for 30 minutes just to sample the famous delicious noodle dish from Malaysia at the festival held in conjunction with the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilisations (CDAC) from May 16 to 22 at the Chinese capital city.

The food festival held at the Olympic Park, here saw 100 operators from 47 Asian countries promoting their food and Malaysia was represented by Restaurant MULU which put up Sarawak Laksa as the signature dish at the fair.

Restaurant owner, Jasmine Kho, from Kuching, said visitors have been milling around her stall as early as 10 am to taste Sarawak laksa prepared with a special recipe from the family.

“The recipe for the laksa came from my grandmother and I have to bring in 36 special spices from Malaysia to preserve the authentic taste of soup,” said the Sarawakian who has made a name for herself in Beijing through the restaurant.

Jasmine said orders for Sarawak laksa at her stall were brisk and she managed to serve more than 300 bowls yesterday.

For Mork Khnet, 23, a visitor from Cambodia, the taste of Sarawak laksa made her yearn for food from home.

“It tastes really good, it is similar to the food in Cambodia, now I am already missing my hometown,” she told Bernama here, yesterday.

Meanwhile, Peking University student, Tawtar Win Pyae Sone of Myanmar said the Malaysian dish is unique to her.

“Very tasty! It is really good and unique,” she said.

Jasmine said apart from promoting Malaysian food, it is also a platform to display Malaysian culture at the international function.

“Besides food, we also put up a traditional Malay dress for display and many visitors especially the locals were attracted by the attire which was seen as modest and attractive,” she said. – Bernama
