MIRI: A 76 year-old longhouse resident from Tuai Rumah Apin Suyung, Bakong, lost some of his belongings when fire engulfed an outdoor shed that is used as a storage early this morning.

A total of six Iban traditional jars (Tajau Iban) were among items that were destroyed in the incident besides some power equipment, two Iban musical instruments (tawak), pua kumbu and several gunnies of rice.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

According to Zone 6 Miri Fire and Rescue acting chief Ahmad Nizam Sapaiee, quick thinking by several villagers managed to prevent the fire from spreading further to the longhouse.

It was made to understand that the store shed was located behind the longhouse.

“We received an emergency call on the incident at 6.50am and a team of firemen from Lopeng Fire station was dispatched to the scene.

“On arriving, the firemen found that the fire had already been put out by the villagers using fire extinguishers,” said Ahmad Nizam.
