KUCHING: The state government’s plan of building a light rail transit (LRT) system is well received by residents of Kota Samarahan.

Hafizul Rasdi, 32, expressed full support for Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg’s plan of transforming the living landscape of Sarawakians, which is in line with today’s advanced technology.

“We, as residents of Samarahan will benefit from not only business expansion in Samarahan but also save time when travelling from Kuching to Samarahan.

“What interests me and is very important for all Samarahan residents is that with the LRT, it will definitely reduce traffic congestion, especially during the peak hours when people go and come back from work,” he said when speaking to New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

Hafizul pointed to the fact that Kota Samarahan is the main route to Sadong Jaya, Simunjan, Serian and for road users from Maludam who travel to Kuching via Batang Lupar route.

“Kota Samarahan is the educational hub for Sarawak. Hence, with the LRT, it will be easier for students to travel to Kuching or to the Airport and save time,” said Hafizul who is also a teacher at SJKC Chung Hua Maludam.

If seen from the aspect of tourism, tourists or anyone from other districts or divisions who are interested to go Samarahan, they could use the LRT as it will be cheaper and at the same time encouraging the tourism industry in Samarahan, he said.

“With the LRT, the economy will also grow.

“This is because travelling from one place to another is easier and convenient for the people and besides that Kota Samarahan is a fast-growing town in Sarawak,” he said.

“On safety aspect, LRT is safer and it reflects that the public transportation in Sarawak is equal to the ones in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Therefore, I urge all Sarawakians especially in Kota Samarahan to support the government’s efforts under the leadership of Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari to continue the LRT project,” he said.

Meanwhile, Muhd Syazwan Iqbal Anuar Shadzat, 21, said the construction of the LRT system was important to help middle and low income groups to travel to their destinations.

“Obviously, with our current economic situation, not everyone can afford to buy a car. The LRT is very important for this group and if we compare with the money spent on petrol, using LRT will be a lot cheaper,” he said.
