KUCHING: Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has called on the federal transport ministry to look into the high cost of airline tickets so that everyone can afford to travel.

In saying this, the minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture said that he has been monitoring ticket prices for a few days and discovered that they were excessively high.

“I am hoping that the airfare would not be too expensive. As of a few days ago, travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Miri was up to three to four thousand, which is really insane,” he said during a press conference on Friday (Sept 17).

Abdul Karim further stated that because flying is the sole way for Malaysians to go to (Peninsular Malaysia) or to come over here (Sabah and Sarawak), airfare prices should be made more reasonable for everyone.

“If we have another alternative for commuting, the high price of airline tickets is acceptable.

“However, given that flying is our only means to commute, if the airlines’ industry sets that kind of price, we will be unable to travel since the prices will skyrocket.

“This is unfair, and the ministry should look into it further,” he added.
