Man fined for selling illegal firecrackers

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM300 for selling 313 boxes of various firecrackers and fireworks without a valid permit.

Sofiyan Omar, 31, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge framed under Rule 74 of the Explosives Rules 1923, which carries a RM300 fine, upon conviction.

The court also ordered him to serve three days in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the case facts, police raided a roadside stall along Jalan Satok around 9.30pm on April 4, where an unlicensed firecrackers and fireworks business was discovered.

Police found that various firecrackers and fireworks were being sold and stored without a valid permit, leading to the arrest of Sofiyan and the seizure of 313 boxes of firecrackers and fireworks.

Furthermore, investigations also revealed that Sofiyan was operating the business without the necessary license and permit.

Insp Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted while Sofiyan was unrepresented.
