MIRI:  A man in his forties was swindled of RM27,000 of his savings in a phone scam call from a person who claimed to be his friend.

According to Miri OCPD ACP Alexson  Naga Chabu, in a statement, a report on the incident was received on August 24.

The misfortune occurred when the victim, working as a road supervisor, received a phone call from the suspect who claimed to be his friend using a new number 011-28988579 as he claimed his previous handphone and wallet had gone missing.

“The suspect had asked the victim for financial assistance because his bank account still needed to be updated following the alleged loss of his wallet,” said Alexson.

The victim then made a total of six online transactions totalling RM27,000.

However, the victim realised he was cheated after he met the real friend on August 25 and he had never lost his wallet.
