Man nabbed for electrofishing in Niah River

MIRI: Marine police detained a fisherman in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Pensura’ for allegedly fishing with direct current electricity which is illegal.

Miri OCPD ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the arrest was made around 9.45pm on Tuesday (Mar 14) near Kampung Tanjong Belipat, Niah River.

It is believed that the local man was using electric devices to catch fish and prawns in the area which is an offence under the State Fisheries Ordinance 2003.

“The team managed to seize the suspect’s boat with an outboard motor, a battery, a bamboo stick wrapped with electrical wires, a fish landing net and a power inverter.

“In addition, various types of prawns and fish worth one kilogramme were also seized,” he said.

The total seizure value was estimated at RM5,110.

The seized items and the suspect have been handed over to the Miri Fisheries Office for further action.
