PADAWAN: Police here arrested a jobless man for allegedly committing gang robbery with another man against a foreign couple along Jalan Arang in the wee hours of Tuesday (Jan 3).

Padawan police chief Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad in a statement, said the 32-year-old suspect was detained in front of a shop behind Food Premier, Jalan Batu Kawa around 11.10 pm on the same day.

The arrest was made by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) assisted by the D9 branch and Kota Sentosa police after a police report was lodged by the 38-year-old complainant.

“Also seized are two phones, a watch, a set of car keys, a sling bag and a Perodua Viva.

“Background checks found that the suspect has several prior records related to retaining stolen property and housebreaking,” he said.

The suspect is currently placed in Tapah police lock-up for further action while, efforts to locate the other suspect is still ongoing.

Earlier, the incident happened in a shared room at a construction site of an apartment around 2.30 am on Tuesday when two men suddenly entered the room and demanded for their work permit as they claimed to be from the Immigration Department.

“The complainant and her husband were forced to turn in their belongings and permit.

“However, the suspects were spooked away and fled in a brown Proton Saga after the complainant told them where their machete was kept in the room.

“The suspects managed to escape with the complainant and her husband’s phones and a work permit with losses amounting to RM1,600,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery.
