SERIAN: The Sarawak Marine Police Region 5 arrested a local man and seized 978 boxes of illicit cigarettes and beers along Jalan Serian yesterday (Jan 16).

Its commander ACP Abdul Rahman Mat Hasan said the arrest and seizure were made after the team intercepted a lorry around 2.45 am.

They found a total of 952 boxes of alcoholic beverages and 26 boxes of cigarettes on the lorry.

“The lorry driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested as he failed to provide any relevant documents for the goods.

“The confiscated goods, believed to have been smuggled into the state, and the lorry are estimated to be valued at more than RM2.3 million,” he said.

The confiscated items were handed over to the Serian district police for further action.

The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
