KUCHING: As COVID-19 cases rise, the public is urged to prioritise safety during the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations.

In response, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has launched a face mask distribution initiative at Stutong Community Market.

Wee said the main objective of the effort was to raise awareness about the importance of wearing face masks at all times, particularly in crowded spaces like markets.

“With the Chinese New Year just around the corner, I extended the distribution to include traditional angpow (red packets) envelopes and Couplets, to further enhance the Chinese New Year culture and spirit.

“In addition, it is an honour to have our Sarawak very own prominent Chinese Calligrapher, Sim Poh Yaw, 97 to share or contribute a few words of calligraphy in the couplet,” Wee said in a press release, on Sunday.

Wee, along with fellow Councillors, led the distribution of couplets, angpow, and face masks to the public and hawkers at all markets under Kuching South’s jurisdiction from this weekend onwards in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New year 2024.
