KUCHING: Foreign nationals running food outlets and stalls in the city have been warned to immediately stop all operations.

Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan Khay Syn said last week the council does not issue licences to foreigners to operate businesses in the city.

“The council had never issued licences to foreigners, including those from China and Taiwan who are here on social visit passes,” he explained.

He said MBKS will organise more operations to nab these foreigners.

“Usually our officers will ask them to immediately stop operation with a warning.

“If they continue, their goods and equipment will be confiscated and they will be issued with summonses,” he said.

He also warned that stern actions would be taken against those operating illegal stalls on five-footways and parking spaces.

“The council is aware that the number of those operating illegal stalls in this manner is increasing.

“While we want to be nice to people, we cannot allow these illegal activities to prolong,” said Chan.

He also disclosed that the city council has received many complaints from the public on illegal roadside hawkers who are a traffic hazard.
