KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) chairman Datuk Peter Minos lauded the extraordinary spirit of the crowd that flocked to The Summer Mall Shopping Centre yesterday for the Sarawak Merdeka Convoy.

He credited the Samarahan Resident Office for their outstanding work in welcoming the arrival of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg despite the scorching heat.

“When it comes to public gatherings, Samarahan people are tops. I cannot beat them on that.

“I thought it would be a modest function, but it turned out to be a really huge one with people from Simunjan, Sebuyau, Sadong Jaya, Asajaya, and Kota Samarahan flocking in,” he said in a statement today (July 16).

He said the Samarahan people eagerly anticipate July 22, the date on which Sarawak was liberated from British colonialism and foreign rule in 1963.

“Nothing compares to freedom and liberty, concepts that make life worth living and pursuing. Foreign colonialism squeezed and constricted life, while liberty freed and beautified it.

“That happened to Sarawakians on July 22, 1963. We cannot and must not forget that,” he stressed.

The upcoming weekend, according to Minos, will be a truly wonderful and cheerful day that deserves to be remembered and honoured.

In the meantime, he wished Sarawakians a Happy Sarawak Day and urged everyone to remember it eternally.
