SIBU: Despite unpredictable weather affecting vegetable prices, Midin, a local fern widely enjoyed as a vegetable, has remained unaffected by market trends.

The Sibu Vegetable Planters Association advisor Kong Hua Kuong said that the price of Midin has remained stable for years, with fluctuations in demand having no effect.

“At RM15 per kg, and sometimes reaching a high of RM18 per kg, the price of Midin has remained constant,” he said.

However, he was concern over the dwindling supply of this pesticide-free vegetable.

“In the past, there were a significant number of locals who would harvest it from the wild, but their numbers have declined over the years. The reason behind this decline remains a mystery,” he added.

Recognised as an excellent source of iron, fibre, potassium, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, Midin has become a popular choice among health-conscious individuals. However, due to its short shelf life, it is best enjoyed on the same day it is plucked from the forest, even if refrigerated.

The traditional way to prepare Midin is by frying it with slices of garlic or belacan (shrimp paste), bringing out its unique flavours and textures. This simple yet delicious dish has earned a place on the menus of numerous eateries, including coffee shops and restaurants, further cementing its popularity among locals and visitors alike.

It’s worth noting that hawkers often sell bundles of Midin weighing 50g for just RM2, making it one of the most affordable vegetable options in the area.
