SIBU: The establishment of an entity encompassing all four water management agencies in the state and the transformation of the state water authority into a body corporate will prioritise the welfare of all of its employees in Sarawak.

Utility and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi said this is among various aspects taken into consideration for the major restructuring plan.

He also gives assurances that the restructuring will not affect the existing water supply operations for consumers, adding that the establishment of the entity will ensure a more efficient and sustainable oversight and supply of water in Sarawak.

“A recent benchmarking visit to Western Australia aimed to share experiences and assess the adoption of proven water regulatory body structures, organisations, and legislation applicable to Sarawak.

“The Ministry is also exploring the integration of four water supply agencies by establishing a single water supply entity to be supervised by a corporate body tailored to the needs and legislation of Sarawak,” he said.

He said this in his speech read out by the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication permanent secretary Jafri Lias at Sibu Water Board (SWB) Dinner here last night (Nov 10).

Meanwhile, at the event, Julaihi congratulates all SWB’s staff for their outstanding performance in delivering their services.

“I sincerely hope that SWB’s staff will continuously enhance their capabilities and work quality to prepare us towards the future Water Supply Entity.

He said that the excellent achievements of all water entities in Sarawak need to be further improved for the coming years.

“This is because the public always assesses the quality and performance of public servants, especially in service delivery, so that the water supply in Sibu can meet the needs of the community.

“Therefore, we need to establish standards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in our efforts to meet the expectations and aspirations of the people,” he added.
