SIBU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been urged to assist in rescuing Sibu residents who have fallen victim to international scams and are currently stranded in Myanmar.

Sibu MP Oscar Ling said that the victims include a significant number of Ibans, not just Chinese, as previously thought.

“More than 10 to 20 Ibans are among them. Some of the victims’ family members informed me that those defrauded have escaped the scam park, while others have been detained by the Myanmar military,” Ling said in a statement today (Nov 20).

He called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take immediate action, particularly for those tricked into scamming operations in northern Myanmar. Ling plans to compile a list of victims and submit it to the ministry to ensure no one is overlooked.

Victim’s families are encouraged to provide information at the DAP headquarters in Taman Rajang, Sibu. This includes personal details like names, identity card numbers, passports, gender, and last known locations.

Ling outlined the procedure for reporting: families should first contact the police, who will record their statements and forward the information to Bukit Aman Police Headquarters and the Ministry for further action.

He added with a warning to the public about the dangers of seemingly attractive online job advertisements and foreign job offers, which could be fronts for illegal scamming operations.
