MIRI: Mayor Adam Yii launched Miri City Council’s (MCC) Traffic Warden Task Force on Monday for the benefit of motorists on the road.

“The city council, being the local authority, is now being widely recognised and entrusted as the agency capable of looking after areas under its jurisdiction,” he said, adding it is being delegated with more powers to enforce rules and regulations.

“In this particular aspect we are now witnessing the appointment of seven Traffic Wardens under the provision of Road Transport Act 1987.”

He said with the city progressing and expanding at a faster pace, the problem of traffic congestion during traffic peak hours in the Central Business District was inevitable.

“On many occasions you will agree with me that the traffic congestion is due to human factors where some inconsiderate car drivers park indiscriminately or park  at  prohibited areas.

“Therefore, with the Traffic Wardens Force being formed, we hope this would improve the situation,” Yii added.

Earlier, council secretary Abdul Rahman Taupek said the traffic warden task force personnel would be given the trust to carry out duties in respect of traffic control during traffic peak hours at areas under MCC jointly with the police.

“This will include stationing at traffic light controlled road junctions to regulate traffic flow, as and when required, as well as enforcement of other aspects on traffic matters,” he said.

However, he said, they will not be in school areas during school peak hours as this duties will be covered by those who have been appointed as school traffic wardens.

Also present at the launching ceremony was the Deputy Mayor Julaihi Mohamad.
