KUCHING: Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contributors have offered mixed reactions to the Federal government’s decision to allow EPF withdrawals from Account 1 under Budget 2021.

The move which was announced by Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz last Friday would allow contributors to withdraw RM500 a month up to a total of RM6,000 over 12 months to assist members who have lost their jobs.

The initiative is expected to lighten the financial burden of approximately 600 thousand affected contributors and eligible members can apply beginning January 2021.

New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday interviewed the public here to get a feel of the prevailing sentiments on the ground.

“We need to keep the welfare of unemployed individuals in check because RM500 is not going to be enough especially for those with families. This initiative will be more effective if paired with the moratorium.”

“The initiative itself is commendable but the amount is too little especially for the unemployed group. The government should look into this as the people have the right to utilise their savings.”

“This will surely alleviate the hardship faced by the unemployed. It is also a good solution in the short term and those who utilise this opportunity should also consider about spending their savings which is meant for future times.”

“The initiative will definitely help those who are jobless during the pandemic especially those with families. But in my opinion, this should be considered only as a last resort.”

“I believe that it would help facilitate those who are jobless during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is an option and should only be taken by those who are truly in need.”

“This will go a long way for those who are unemployed as a result of the pandemic. With the initiative, they will be able to fulfill their temporary needs until they find a new job.”
