Mooncake Festival symbolises communal unity

SIMANGGANG: The celebration of Mooncake Festival is important to ensure the valuable culture can be inherited by younger generations, said Simanggang assemblyman Datuk Francis Harden Hollis.

Harden, who is also Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, said that in the past, celebration of mooncake was the medium for delivering news of insurgency but now it symbolises unity among the community.

“I am excited by the response of the surrounding community who came in large numbers. This reflects the festive atmosphere of each race which can be a platform for community unity and create strong harmony.

“At the same time we are also celebrating the cultural customs of the Chinese community regarding the Mooncake Festival,” he said when speaking during the celebration held at Sri Aman District Council (MDSA) Mini Stadium here recently.

Harden also congratulated the organising committee of the celebration, Sri Aman District Chinese Community Leaders Association for successfully attracting visitors even though the actual date of the Mooncake Festival had already passed.

Among other programmes held during the celebration were lanterns procession around Simanggang town carried by visitors and children as well as presentation of angpow and quiz competition about the celebration of the Mooncake Festival.
