KUCHING: Plans are afoot to have additional crocodile sanctuaries in the state to provide for their growing numbers in the wild.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh at the same time more education programmes would also be carried out to minimise incidents between humans and crocodiles.

Although there are many sanctuaries available all across the state, more areas or rivers will be identified for this purpose, he said, adding the public will be prohibited from these areas.

He said this during a press conference following the handing over of donations to residences at Tanjung Manis by Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation (PUSAKA) at Wisma Sumber Alam here on Tuesday (March 28).

Len said in Sarikei, for instance, the number of crocodiles was increasing every year, adding that over 100 permits had been issued for the culling of the reptiles.
