Ministry of Health (MOH) training management division secretary Dr Zainal Abidin Sait said that this year’s convocation ceremony created history when the graduates used mortarboards on their graduation day.

“It is a symbol of a learned graduate and this year is the starting point. Those of you who are here today (yesterday) have started the history of wearing the mortarboard.

“Those with sashes (excellent academic student) are not easy to achieve because the lowest mark overall is 96 per cent and their achievement is indeed significant,” he said.

He said this in his speech during the Sarawak Zone MOHTI convocation at DeTAR Putra, University Malaysia Sarawak here, yesterday.

According to Dr Zainal, those with sashes have fulfilled the conditions to obtain the excellent academic student award.

“For graduates who have been involved in sports and cultural activities, I congratulate you because we have not just become nurses but also paramedic nurses who maintain a healthy lifestyle.

“This excellence on paper needs to be translated into excellence in the service to the community. It holds no meaning if we score 4.0 but we ask for ourselves more than we contribute towards the development of the nation,” he stressed.
