With Barry at the Palace of Westminster on 8 February 2017

By Maya Green

The Palace of Westminster, yes that very place of meeting
Of the House of Commons, and the House of Lords
Making up the two Houses of Parliament
The Parliament of the United Kingdom
An amazing and a historical place, for sure.

An exciting evening on Wednesday, the 8th
In the month of February 2017, was the tour
A special visit to this very historical place
Known as ‘The Mother of all Parliaments’
To here we came, with heartfelt thanks
With the grace, kindness of a dear friend
Himself once, a veteran of this very place

This special tour was ably guided by Barry
Who took us to many parts of the Palace
We saw the Great Hall, the Library,
And the Chapel too, amongst others
Through the corridors were walked
Which links The House of Commons (green coloured)
and The House of Lords (red coloured)

And excitingly, even with a short stint
We sat in the “Strangers’ Gallery”
Listening to the live proceedings, of the House of Lords
For the two august houses, still in session, were working hard
And robustly, at this time of the year

I can proudly say, ‘I was there on the historic night when the vote was taken in the two houses’! Yes, the Brexit vote!
And to cap the evening’s many surprises
It was crowned off with a lovely dinner
In one of the venerable dining rooms

We were joking at dinner, that maybe, perhaps
Nay, most likely, the great Winston Churchill or many other well-known figures
The historical personalities and politicians
All would have had dined here, often times
In this very place, the very same restaurant!
