SAMARAHAN: Kota Samarahan residents can now enjoy a variety of food and drinks at the Medan Selera night market, which was set up by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).

The night market, with 32 stalls selling food and drinks, is located at Taman Unigarden opposite Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas).

Unimas students and their peers from Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sarawak especially, would find it more convenient now to look for a bite or two.

In a statement, MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said that students of Unimas and UiTM — with over 30,000 combined—would always be the council’s priority.

“It is the least that MPKS can do for them.

“I was once at Universiti Malaya back in 1969/1971 and I know how tough it can be (to look for a place to eat).”

“MPKS is also planning to set up a market with a food court surrounded by a garden as well as a playground,” he added.

“MPKS is now looking for the right site and funding.

“The existing Bandar Riyal market is too small and too congested with very few parking spaces.

“If cities like Melbourne can have a beautiful and user-friendly market (Victoria Market), why can’t we?”

“We are working on the idea and given the funding, we will and can do it,” Minos stressed.
