CAMBODIA: The 47 Malaysians who are now detained at Banteay Meanchey Provincial Prison in Cambodia are in fairly good condition.
During a meeting with the detainees yesterday, Julau MP Larry Sng learnt that they were well taken care of.
“We were told they have been treated well and provided with food,” he said in a press conference after visiting the detainees together with reporters and other officials.
Larry said he was also made to understand that the head of the prison even used his own money to buy halal food for the detainees.
“Many efforts have been made by the Cambodian government to ensure that they are not being bullied,” he said.
He said some were reported to have skin rashes, but on the whole they are health and are looking forward to returning to Malaysia as soon as possible.
“The Malaysian Embassy officials there had conveyed their wishes during the visit too,” he said.
He said the Malaysian Embassy’s deputy head of mission in Cambodia, Ruzaimi Mohamad, had given words of encouragement to the detainees and told them they are doing their best to get them released.
“At this time, we need to leave it to Wisma Putra to see what they can do on their part,” he stressed.
He then said the purpose of the visit to Cambodia was to get details of how the detainees are being kept in the prison because most of the parents are worried and desperately seeking for more information.
“I will convey my experience and my findings to the family members once I am back in Malaysia,” he said.
Asked on his next plan, Larry said after arrival in Kuala Lumpur today (Feb 14), he will arrange a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah and seek more clarification from Wisma Putra on action that can be taken through diplomatic channels.
It is also learnt that the Minister of Welfare, Community Well-being, Women, Family and Childhood Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah will visit the detainees too today.
