MUKAH: Police arrested a local man believed to be the main suspect in an armed gang robbery at a 24-hour convenience store in Selangau town yesterday (Apr 16).

Mukah OCPD DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said his men picked up the 28-year-old along Mile 10, Jalan Mukah-Selangau around 8.30 pm last night.

Police confiscated a car, a shotgun, one live round of ammunition, two machetes, clothes and other equipment.

“Background checks found that the suspect had two prior records related to criminal intimidation and drug offence.

“The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, if convicted,” he said.

Rizal said police are tracking down two other accomplices.

In the robbery around 3 am two men armed with a shotgun and a machete entered the store and forced a 33-year-old woman to empty the cash register.

“One of them threatened to shoot the employee if she did not hand over the RM522 cash to them,” Rizal said.

Footage from the store’s closed-circuit television (CCTV) showed the suspects, who were wearing caps and masks, fleeing the store in a white pickup truck driven by another suspect.
