NEW DELHI: Muslims in India except in the state of Kerala will start Ramadan fasting from tomorrow (Mar 24) as the crescent moon of the Islamic holy month was not sighted on Wednesday evening, except in the southern state.

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, another two countries in the Indian subcontinent will also observe the first day of Ramadan on Friday.

Manwhile, Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee (moonsighting committee) declared Thursday as the first day of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar.

Maldives too will begin the first of Ramadan on Thursday.

The start of the month, during which the holy Quran’s revelation began, depends on the sighting of the new moon. – BERNAMA
