PUTRAJAYA: The National Unity Ministry (KPN) together with the Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) is currently studying the proposed Harmony Charter, which could be adopted as a guide for building a peaceful and harmonious nation.

National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said the charter could also lead to prosperity as envisioned in the Malaysia Madani concept.

He also emphasised that there will be absolutely no compromise with any party that sparks racial polemics and touches on religious sensitivities that disrupt the harmony and unity of the people.

“I also want to remind everyone to be careful in making any statements or actions that touch on religious and racial sensitivities,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Aaron said such actions could be punishable under the relevant laws such as Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

He said all parties are advised to promote the basic principles of national integration, namely understanding, respect and acceptance, which are fundamental in fostering harmony and diversity in society.

He said the Rukun Negara is a fundamental principle that should serve as a guide for the development and preservation of harmony in Malaysia.

Aaron said he fully supports the call of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia for the authorities to take stern action, including imposing heavy penalties on those who commit offences, so that it serves as a lesson to others. – BERNAMA
