Native Court capacity building to enhance competency

KUCHING: A series of Capacity Building Programmes were organised for Native Court presiding officers and officials to enhance their skills and competency in handling cases.

According to Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk John Sikie Tayai, this year, six of the said programmes were carried out with three similar programmes implemented for court clerks, peons and officers of the Resident and District Offices dealing with Native Courts.

To date, over 6,000 people have attended the Capacity Building Programmes organised by the Native Courts since 2014.

“Through this Capacity Building Programmes, the Native Courts Sarawak is confident that the performance of the community chiefs and community leaders in the settlement of their cases is further enhanced and improved.

“Moreover, with such programmes, the Chief Registrar Office will always give their best in providing excellent service to all stakeholders,” he said.

On another matter, Sikie disclosed that thus far, the state government has upgraded or renovated 21 courtrooms in various districts and sub-districts throughout the state.

He said that the upgrading programme started in 2015 and that the government has spent over RM3.2 million on the upgrading works.

“For this year, three more courtrooms have been approved under the upgrading programme, namely at Pejabat Daerah Lingga, Pejabat Daerah Daro and Pejabat Daerah Kecil Nanga Medamit.

“The projects which are being implemented through the State Development Office would be completed within the year,” he said.
