SIBU: Proposing a new Malaysia Agreement (MA) is inappropriate and should not happen, says Safiee Ahmad.

The Daro assemblyman added that it was similar to running away from the responsibility of fulfilling the agreement, which was unanimously agreed upon by previous leaders when forming Malaysia.

He said he fully supported the MA63 as “it is the original document of the formation of Malaysia.”

“The main focus should be given to fulfilling all the agreements enshrined in MA63 and not the other way round,” he said today.

Safiee urged all Sarawakians, especially folk in Daro, to get behind the statement made by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg as well as Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts  Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah that a new MA was inappropriate.

“The issue that should be discussed is not a new MA but on meeting all the requirements, demands and agreements agreed upon when signing the MA63 at the time of the formation of Malaysia,” he said.

Safiee also pointed out that a special committee chaired by the Prime Minister had been set up.

“They should continue to look at any agreements that had eroded over the years, instead of taking a backward action.”
