Labourer gets 10 years for causing grievous injury

MIRI: A labourer was sentenced to 10 years’ jail and given five strokes of the rotan by the Sessions Court here yesterday after he pleaded guilty to slashing his friend’s right wrist with a Samurai sword two years ago.

Judge Steve Ritikos made the decision after Jack Reong, 39, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 326 of the Penal Code for deliberately causing grievous injury using a weapon.

According to the charge, Jack allegedly caused severe injury by slashing his friend’s right wrist, Atong Kanang, 46, using a Samurai sword.

Jack pleaded guilty to the offence which was committed in an unnumbered house at Riam Jaya here at 8.30pm on October 20, 2016.

The prosecution was represented by Assistant Superintendent Koay Kok Ping.

Earlier, Jack was also charged in a Magistrate’s Court for killing a man three years ago.

He was charged with causing the death of Minggu Nanggai, 44, in a house at Kampung Lusut Jaya between 8 pm and 2.30 am, from 29 to 30 May, 2015.

Jack was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for a mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The accused understood the charge read before Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa. However, no confession was recorded.

Zuraini then set October 10, for further mention of the case.

The prosecution was represented by Assistant Superintendent Mary Ong.
