KUCHING: Sarawak is sending two teams comprising 16 players to participate in the ongoing 10th Special Olympics Borneo Cup 2017 in at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Berakas, Brunei Darussalam scheduled from Nov 15 to 20.

The handing over of sponsorship in terms of jerseys to the Special Olympics Kuching Chapter’s children athletes was done on Tuesday at LEA Sports Centre (LSC), Sarawak Plaza Shopping Complex, here. Datin Dayang Mariani Abang Zain, the president and head of Delegation of Special Olympics Kuching Chapter received the sponsorship from Poh Siok Hoon, senior operation manager of LEA Sports Centre Sdn Bhd.

The Special Olympics Kuching Chapter will be joined by the Special Olympics from Sibu and Miri divisions as the Special Olympics Sarawak team. A total of 13 teams of special athletes from Brunei, Sabah, Sarawak, Kalimantan will be competing in the 5-a-side football tournament.

Also joining the game are a team from Federal Territory of Labuan. Specially minted medals will be made for this year’s tournament and the overall champions will keep the trophy contributed by Her Royal Highness, Princess ‘Azemah Ni’matul Bolkiah until the next tournament. LSC is supporting the Special Olympics Kuching Chapter’s children athletes on their upcoming participation for the 10th Special Olympics Borneo Cup 2017 by providing them with football jerseys under the brand of ‘Starsport’.

The sponsorship also covers apparel for the coaches who are accompanying the Special Children. LSC has been a vital supporter of Special Olympics Kuching Chapter and Special Olympics Sarawak for years.

Among its support to these athletes was during the recent 2015 Special Olympics World Games’ which was held in Los Angeles, California from July 25 to August 2. The 2015 Los Angeles Special Olympics attracted nearly 7,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches from 177 countries worldwide.
