KUCHING: Hope Place is helping an 81-year-old man with basic food aid on a regular basis.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) recently visited Raugig Nia who lives alone in his house at Kampung Staang, Padawan.

He who has never married and does not have anyone to turn to has been receiving help from Hope Place’s volunteer, Eric, who later informed the NGO about the elder’s situation.

Raugig, who is unable to walk far without a walking cane, said Eric has countless times helped in buying his household necessities, brought him packed food and even helped him withdraw money at the bank.

He used to be a farmer in his younger days and has long retired. He also complained to Hope Place that he has pains and aches all over his body.

“Eric has helped Raugig apply for the Perumahan Penduduk Rakyat Termiskin (PPRT) Scheme.

“His old wooden house was so dilapidated that it was half crumbling. And so now Raugig lives in a new PPRT house.

“However, the house is very small, with a tiny section as his kitchen area and another corner to put his bed. The house also does not have water supply nor toilet facilities”, said Hope Place in a statement.

Apart from the assistance from the NGO, Raugig also receives RM500 from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) monthly.
