SHAH ALAM: DAP has reiterated that no single party can rule the country by itself apart from forming coalition with responsible federal partners.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said it is the hope of the DAP to become a power sharing partner with three other parties namely PKR, Amanah and Bersatu through Pakatan Harapan (PH) before winning the last general election, not for power or money but for a better Malaysia.
“(Before this) We have proven in Penang and Selangor that with political coalition, we can rule better than Barisan Nasional (BN). But can we assure Malaysians (in the last general election)?
“Nonetheless, on May 9 2018, against all odds, millions of Malaysians unite against BN and voted for change,” he said when speaking at the 2019 DAP National Conference here today.
The conference which is the party’s first national delegates assembly since winning the 14th general election (GE14), was attended by 969 delegates and 188 observers.
Lim also reminded DAP members not to be lulled by the party’s power because much work have to be done by PH including fulfilling the pledges made in GE14 in May last year.
He said the concept of New Malaysia should assure the people that the country’s political, economic and cultural future is secured apart from the need to abandon the perception of domination by a certain race, which is a lie as it would only enrich those who play racial politics.
“New Malaysia is the main vision which is practical in guiding all Malaysians towards a better future,” he said.
Meanwhile, at a media conference, when asked on the country’s race-based policy, Lim said it was started by Barisan Nasional (BN) and not by PH.
He said at the moment, the policy would continue but the PH government will ensure no specific race will be left behind and in fact, the Malay community will also accept the policy of helping the poor and needy.
“As an example, a large portion of the B40 group comprised Malays but there are also poor Chinese and Indians. The policy based on needs would assist those who are poor was not carried out by the previous government,” he said. – Bernama
