KUCHING: A manhunt codenamed ‘Op Kesan’ to locate Bony, who had escaped from the Tapah police lock-up on June 12, is still underway.

However, despite more than two weeks of searching, the whereabouts of the 31-year-old Indonesian are still not known.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said this when met by reporters today (June 28).

“We are still carrying out the operation with a strength of 62 officers and members in Padawan.

“The search is being carried out in Padawan, Siburan and Tapah areas,” he said, adding the police will inform if there are updates.

On whether there are plans to seek help from their counterparts in Indonesia, he said they will go in that direction after reviewing their operation.

Anyone with information or who comes across the escapee, is urged to contact the operations room at Padawan district police headquarters (IPD) at 082-862233 or any nearby police station.

On June 12, Bony and his countryman Kelvin, 21, escaped from the Tapah police lock-up around 1pm.

Both men from East Java were initially arrested for an immigration-related offence on June 7 and placed in the lock-up for further investigation.

Their escape triggered a manhunt with the Tiger Platoon of Sarawak General Operations Force (GOF), K9 unit of the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Police Air Wing Unit’s Drone team enlisted to help search for the escapees.

On June 15, the police managed to arrest Kelvin who was spotted by the public, roaming around at Kolam Santai Pancing, Mile 22, Jalan Kuching-Serian.

Five days later, Kelvin was sentenced to a year in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from police custody.
