SIBU: The state government has spent RM18 million on facilities, books and training of teachers since the implementation of the Dual Language Programme (DLP) in 2019 to teach Science and Mathematics in English.

Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said Sarawak has been using English as the teaching language for the two subjects.

“We are now teaching Primary 4 students (using English), and we will go all the way till the students reach form five,” he said after officiating at the Sarawak Zone KV Skills Competition at the Sibu Vocational College here today.

The Nangka assemblyman was commenting on former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s call to Putrajaya recently to reinstate the use of English in the teaching of Science and Mathematics.

Dr Annuar said the Sarawak government will continue its policy on the teaching of Science and Mathematics subjects in English regardless of the federal government’s decision to reinstate the policy or otherwise.

“Sarawak will never turn the policy back to Bahasa Malaysia. Previously we taught Mathematics and Science in English, but they switched back to Bahasa Malaysia again.

“We were given the opportunity four years ago to return to the original policy. I can guarantee we will never turn it back again, by hook or by crook we will proceed teaching the subjects in English,” he added.
