MIRI: Last Friday’s announcement by Senior Education Minister Senator Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin on the commencement of face-to-face school session next month has received mixed reactions from the public.

Some are in full support of the announcement as they believe face-to-face learning is much more effective.

They also have full confidence in the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and hoping that teachers, parents, and students will adhere to these strictly.

However, some are of the opinion that the reopening of schools should be further postponed as the state is still recording high Covid-19 cases, especially in red zones.

Some express their worries over their children’s health and safety, with some opting to continue their children’s learning session from home.

New Sarawak Tribune today interviewed some of them. The following are what they said.

I strongly support the reopening of schools. Virtual learning for me has posed some challenges, especially in areas with weak internet coverage. However, there are some parents who are concerned with schedule set for the reopening of schools, especially those who have more than two children in different years.

I’m still worried about the health and safety of my children as they have to go back to school in these still-unpredictable times. I wish online classes would continue, or the reopening of schools be postponed.

Some parents are still worried about sending their children back to school. I can understand their concerns and as a grandmother myself, I am also worried for my grandchildren’s safety. But I do believe that the schools will impose strict SOPs.

I welcome the decision because not every child can focus during their virtual learning sessions. I put my trust with the SOPs laid down by the schools. It cannot be denied that Covid-19 has brought new challenges not only to us but the whole world.

There is no point in rushing. We need to be more careful and while cases may be decreasing, we should not be complacent. We have to keep our guard up and always practise social distancing, good personal hygiene, and wear face masks.

I’m still not comfortable with the idea yet (the reopening of schools), because I’m still worried for my six year-old daughter’s safety. My husband and I are opting for online learning at home.

Some students prefer to return to face-to-face school sessions, while some would want to continue their schooling sessions at home. As a student myself, I am growing anxious because examinations are coming.
