KUCHING:  Sarawak Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) in collaboration with the Kuching Resident Office yesterday held a Kuching Division Environmental Awareness Programme at the Yayasan Sarawak Hall.

Local Government and Housing Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil officiated at the event.

NREB Environmental Quality Controller Justine Jok Emang explained that the programme was aimed at preserving and improving the quality of Sarawak’s environment.

“As a leading environmental agency in Sarawak, NREB is committed to managing the environment in line with the vision of NREB, which is a Clean, Green and Healthy Sarawak.

“The various approaches used to manage the environment in Sarawak include law enforcement and environmental education,” he added.

According to Justine, under the Natural Resources and Environment Authority’s ordinance, those guilty of conducting open burning without approval can be fined up to RM30,000 and jailed up to three years.

He said everyone should be responsible for the environment.

He hoped agencies like the Department of Environment and Local Authorities would cooperate fully with the NREB to create a Clean, Green and Healthy Sarawak.
