KUCHING: Police have detainedthree men on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol at Jalan Simpang Tiga here last night (Apr 9).

Kuching district acting police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the suspects aged 35, 37, and 50 years respectively were found to have alcohol content exceeding the allowable limit when they were tested with the Evidential Breath Analyser (EBA).

The suspects would be charged under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a fine of not less than RM10,000 and not more than RM30,000, or imprisonment not exceeding five years upon conviction.

During the operation, a total of 31 summonses were issued for various traffic offences including driving without valid licences; fancy license plate numbers; failure to wear seatbelt; illegally modified exhaust among others.  

Merbin commented that although the ‘Ops Mabuk’ roadblocks were often held, there were still people driving under the influence of alcohol.

“The purpose of ‘Ops Mabuk’ is to prevent road users from driving or riding under the influence of alcohol.

“We will continue these operations to convey the government’s message to curb drink driving in an effort to reduce the rate of road accidents, especially fatal accidents in this district,” he explained.
