KUCHING: Orphans under the care of the Sarawak Orphans’ Welfare Board (Peryatim) have access to obtaining a sound education.

It enables them to do so in the conviction that education is one of the building blocks for success in society.

Peryatim Chief Executive Officer Mohamad Salleh Hamidin said that without a doubt education plays a vital role in a person’s life.

“Most of the children under Peryatim’s care are those who are less able.

“Seeing that having education will help them lead a better life in the future, we have taken great care in ensuring they get a good education.

“The proof is that some of the orphans from this place have managed to get good careers as engineers, teachers and so on,” he said at the opening of the TIPS-PERYATIM 2023 Programme at the Laila Taib Welfare Complex, here, on Sunday.

Peryatim, he said, will also work with the Distinguished Tuition Centre to help children under the board to get a quality education.

“Through this effort, we expect the orphans under Peryatim’s care to further enhance their studies.”

On a related note, Mohamad Salleh also asked the public not to be bound by the stigma that sending children to Peryatim is a humiliating thing.

He  pointed out that many people think that sending their children or orphaned grandchildren to Peryatim is an irresponsible act.

“Such perceptions need to be set aside because some people think that they are able to take care of children who have lost their parents, but in reality, most of them are not cared for at all,” he said.
