KUALA LUMPUR: The unity of the ethnic community in the country is akin to the colours of the layer cake that is synonymous with host of Malaysia Day 2019, Sarawak — the kek lapis.

Academy of Sciences Malaysia Assoc Prof Fellow Dr Madeline Berma said the layer cake was not only a suitable gift to family and friends, it was also a must-have and symbolic dessert for the many family reunion celebrations.

“The combination of different colours make the cake unique and delicious,” she said as guest for a talk programme titled ‘Sumbangan Sabah dan Sarawak’ in the formation of the Federation of Malaysia on the Bernama News Channel, here, today.

The programme is part of the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama)’s effort to record the longest multi-lingual broadcast in the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) 2019 in conjunction with Malaysia Day.

She said the film industry was also responsible in featuring stories and actors of all races and ethnicities, such as those directed by the late and great Tan Sri P. Ramlee who often produced films depicting the various races.
