Overnight torrential rain causes flood havoc

KUCHING: Torrential rain since late Thursday night, caused several low-lying areas in Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Lundu and Serian to be flooded.

The State Fire and Rescue Department operations centre, in a flood update, revealed that flash floods and fallen trees were reported at several locations.

Among the affected areas in Kuching included Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Mile 6 1/2 Jalan Penrissen, Kampung Haji Baki, Taman Matang Jaya, the vicinity of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH), Kampung Tabuan Dayak, Iris Garden, Jalan Masjid, Batu Lintang area, Taman Desa Wira and the vicinity of Timberland Medical Centre.

Meanwhile in Lundu, Kampung Sungai Empit, Kampung Sungai Lundu, Kampung Seketi, Lundu police station and the town area, experienced flash floods in the wee hours today.

The department also confirmed that Jalan Semuning Cina heading to Lundu, was cut off due to the floods.

In Kota Samarahan and Siburan, flash floods rising up to calf-level rendered residents in numerous areas such as Taman Muara Tuang, Taman Uni Vista, Taman Samarindah, Taman Merlin, Taman Indah Landeh and Kampung Jawa Semenggok and Taman Duranda Emas, to stay indoors.

In Serian, firemen were deployed to attend to several fallen trees along Jalan Ensegei Baki and Jalan Kampung Rimba Padi.

There were also reports of cars submerged in waters after crashing by the roadside at Unigarden, Kota Samarahan and Jalan Penrissen near Kuching Sentral.

As of 5pm this evening, the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) revealed that a total of 755 flood victims from 211 families were evacuated to nine temporary evacuation centres in three districts – Kota Samarahan, Kuching and Lundu.

A car is submerged in flood waters at Unigarden, Kota Samarahan. The driver was reported to have gotten out to safety.

The centres in Kota Samarahan are Balai Raya Kampung Sungai Empit (35 evacuees), Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan (31), Dewan Masyarakat Kampung Pengkalan Kuap (152), Surau Kampung Bukit Berangan (six) and Balai Raya Kampung Merdang Lumut (11).

Meanwhile in Kuching, 280 victims are seeking refuge in Dewan Kampung Sinar Budi, SJK Chung Hua Sungai Tengah (85) and Dewan Masyarakat Stapok (56).

Apart from that, a total of 99 evacuees are taking shelter at Balai Raya Kampung Padi Sematan in Lundu.

Authorities are still carrying out monitoring at flood prone areas and will remain on alert in case any people needed to be evacuated from their homes.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department, heavy downpour is expected to continue over the next few days.
